Capital City Music Project Overview
A Music-Based After School Program for Piano, Strings, Percussion, Voice, and Musical Theater in Washington DC.
The National Conservatory of Arts' vision of an intensive and transformational piano and orchestral music education program, fosters social development through exceptional music training for 1st-8th grade students in Washington DC schools. Students in the Capital City Music Project are immersed in a thoughtfully structured music class schedule five days a week, resulting in rapid skill acquisition and comprehension.
Designed and led by our outstanding piano and string chairpersons, students in the program receive daily ensemble and orchestral instruction in their instrument and weekly group lessons, choir, music history, and theory classes. The National Conservatory of Arts Capital City Music Program's first site launched at 1810 16th Street NW, located in DC's Logan’s Circle?Adams Morgan neighborhood. Currently, we are located at 4606 16th Street NW, in the beautiful residential neighborhood of Crestwood (aka The Gold Coast).
While the students' focus is on musical learning, the goals of the Capital City Music Project are social and intellectual – as the students learn to play an instrument with their peers in a piano ensemble or orchestra, they also learn valuable life skills such as discipline, focus, and persistence. The act of learning and performing music as part of a group functions as a metaphor for society, and every day the students are acquiring the skills that will help them succeed in school and life. In addition to rehearsing as a group, our teaching techniques encourage peer-to-peer instruction in which more advanced students transfer their knowledge to younger students, allowing them to gain leadership experience and encouraging responsibility.
